Rump Steak

This is a quick and remarkably easy method of cooking steak. I had always imagined that it would be impossible to cook steak well, and that only those with intense skill and judgement could perfect it, until my mother showed me this fool-proof method of getting delicious, rare steak. Rump steak tends to be a cheaper, and often just as tasty alternative to your typical sirloin steak, when cooked well. Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 approx. 500g packet rump steak
  • approx. 30ml oil / fat of some kind
  • approx. 1 tbsp mustard powder
  • salt and black pepper, to season
  • 1 large onion
  • approx. 150ml sour cream
  • juice of 1 orange
  • potatoes / rice and veg to serve

Method:

1. Heat half the oil in a pan

 

2. While this is heating, 'bash; the steak

 

 

3. Spread it with mustard powder and season with salt and pepper on both sides

4. When the oil is very hot, put the steak in the pan and cook on ONE side for 1 minute

 

5. Remove from the pan with one side cooked and leave to rest for 10 minutes

 

6. Meanwhile, chop up the onion and fry this in the pan with the juice and oil from the steak

 

7. When soft, stir in the sour cream and orange juice

 

8. Pour this into a jug to use later as a sauce

 

9. Put the remaining oil into the pan

 

10. Cook the uncooked side of the steak into the hot pan and cook for another minute

 

11. Remove from the pan and pour and remaining juice into the sauce

 

 

12. Slice into 4 equal pieces and serve with the sauce, rice / potatoes and vegetables
